Congratulations to Alabama for upholding parts of a super-duper new immigration law that will allow police officers to hold you without bond if a "reasonable suspicion" exists that you're an illegal immigrant! This is otherwise known as the "Hey, Remember The Good Old Days In Alabama, When We Used To Do Shit Like This To People Who Weren't White? I Sure Miss Those Days" law. → nytimes.com

as someone who lives in alabama, please let it be known that they’re a lot of people here that are against this. myself being one of them. i constantly remind people who are for this law that once upon a time, we were immigrants too. unless you are full blooded native american, your ancestors arrived here on a boat from somewhere else.

the opposition’s first point is always that immigrants are stealing our jobs. i live in a semi small town where agriculture is the lifeblood.  several farmers here are speaking out against this law and the theories that they are taking our jobs by pointing out that every time they try to hire locally, it is to little or no response.

so everyone reading this, just know that not everyone in alabama is an ignorant, racist, god-fearing nascar fan who hates anyone with an accent.

Alabama, you break my heart.

The ephemeral nature of much graphic design is neatly illustrated in a telling little scene in the Michael Mann movie, Heat, starring Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. The De Niro character falls for a woman played by Amy Brenneman, who he meets in a diner. He asks her what she does for a living and she tells him that she’s a graphic designer. She explains that she designs letterheads, logotypes, CD covers and menus for restaurants. De Niro looks at her and asks incredulously: “You go to school for that?” Brenneman laughs apologetically, and says yes. → observatory.designobserver.com
